How to Deal With Anxiety Behind the Block

Writer: Teddy TsakumisTeddy Tsakumis

Swimming, a sport that demands physical and mental strength, which can sometimes trigger anxiety behind the blocks at a meet. The pounding heart, sweaty palms, and racing thoughts can be overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can conquer your anxiety and perform at your best without any worries.

  1. Preparation is Key: The more prepared you are, the less anxious you'll feel. Make sure you've practiced your starts, turns, and strokes extensively in warmup.

  2. Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize yourself behind the blocks, feeling calm and confident. Imagine yourself diving in smoothly and gliding through the water effortlessly. Do not imagine anything about the time, just the action of you swimming.

  3. Deep Breathing: Before your race, take deep breaths. Inhale for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for four. This will slow your heart rate and calms your nerves.

  4. Positive Self-Talk: Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your training, your skills, and your achievements.

  5. Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome: Concentrate on your technique and race strategy rather than the end result. When you shift your focus to the present moment, it's easier to manage anxiety. If you keep your focus on the time itself, you are more prone to making mistakes on the little things such as your turns.

  6. Seek Support: Talk to your coach, teammates, or a sports psychologist about your anxiety. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your needs. You can also browse some of the previous blog posts on this website to help with pre race anxiety.

  7. Post-Race Evaluation: After the race, evaluate your performance objectively. Identify areas for improvement and use each race as a learning experience.

Remember, anxiety is natural. With practice and the right mindset, you can turn anxiety into a source of motivation and perform at your best behind the blocks.
